Vibration and Noise Analysis due to Diesel Hammer Pile Driving

heyyyooooo whats up,, here i ll post about the tittle above, hahaha. As a contractor, sometimes we trapped by regional regulation of using diesel or hydraulic hammer for pilling, because of its noise and vibration can damage the building or environtment around the project area. Here i ll give to u simplification of the noise and vibration analysis for airport project with unknown soil profile and type.
i use refference from NH Pile hammer spec and Swedish Standard for allowable/guidance vibration (ppv)
Just check it,, and comment :)

==========================================================================

Approximation distance of using diesel hammer piller from existing building = 200 m
Noise Due To Diesel Hammer Piller
Refference : NH Pile Hammer Spesification
-          Typical sound level data at 30 m from the hammer :
NH series pile hammer      : 75-90 db(A)
Diesel pile hammer                        : 95-105 db(A)
-          Maxiumum sound level data : 105 db(A)
Simplification formula
Distance law : Sound pressure falls inversely proportional to the distance 1/r from the sound source.
Sound pressure level will be 0 at distance = 105  + 30 = 135 m from sound source.

Vibration Due To Diesel Hammer Piller
Refference : Swedish Standard SS02  54211 (SIS 1999)
Guidance level of peak particle velocity (ppv) for building :
ppv = v0 .  Fb . Fm . Fg

v0  = 9 mm/s (clay, silt, sand, or gravel)
Fb = 1,2 (Industrial or office buildings)
Fm = 1,2 (reinforced concrete)
Fg = 1 (buildings founded on toe-bearing piles)
ppv = 9 . 1,2 . 1,2 . 1
ppv = 12,96 mm/s (allowable)

Power Law :

w = energy per cycle of pilling process (Joule)
r = distance between the source of vibration and the point of measurement (meter)
C and n= depend on soil characteristics, pilling technique, pilling type and ground profile; C typically varies from 0,5 – 1,5 ;n varies from 0,5 – 1

Because of unknown soil characteristics, pilling technique, pilling type and ground profile parameters, then it determined as maximum value C = 1,5 and n = 1

Approximation distance from existing airport building for diesel hammer piller r = 200 m

Energy per cycle of pilling process
w = α . Wh . H
α = Driving energy coefficient (rev.NH pile hammer) = 2
Wh = Ram weight = 8 ton = 8000 Kg = 78480 N
H = maximum Ram fall height (rev.NH pile hammer) = 1,6 m
w = 2 . 78480 . 1,6 = 251136 Joule

ppv at 200 meter due to diesel hammer pilling process = 3,75851 mm/s is below the maximum allowable ppv for building = 12,96 mm/s

  1. Hydraulic hammer may be a trendy kind of spile hammer employed in place of diesel and air hammers for driving steel pipe, formed concrete, and timber piles. Hydraulic hammers used as a result of they're Eco-friendly and is additional economical than others .

    1. yes,,, diesel hammer is more environtmental friendly than other type of hammer.. it ess noise and vibration..

    2. What are the various features that enables such a controlled noise and vibration in these hydraulic hammers?

      Thanks

    3. i m not sure can answer your question,, but it just based on my site invensyigation and interview with the expert in site... there is nothing can control noise and vibration, but you can use cushion betwen the hammer and the pile so it can reduce noise,, and you can control the vibration by the height of ram stroke... the higher of the rams stroke, it makes higher vibration...
      so what do you think?
